September 23rd, 2018, saw us celebrating the wonder of Greenside School’s architecture and mural at Bouncing Off the Wall! This is the fifth Twentieth Century Graphic Arts Fair we have organised at the school, inviting the cream of contemporary printmakers, artists and illustrators and purveyors of Modern British fine prints, books, posters and ephemera.

The first Bouncing Off the Wall! ran in May 2014 to launch the restored Gordon Cullen mural in the school’s foyer - the ‘wall’ inspiring the title! Since 2010 we had been raising awareness and funding to conserve the mural - a fine example of mid-century illustration that earns the Goldfinger designed building the star on its Grade II* listing. The annual occasion has a celebratory atmosphere with wonderful stalls bursting with countless delights and a charming vintage tearoom run by the Parent Staff Association.

Activities this year included illustration workshops with Clare Youngs and Sally Kindberg, Pollocks Toy Theatre performances and a talk by James Russell on the book jackets of Edward Bawden based on the book ‘Are You Sitting Comfortably’ published by the Mainstone Press. As we now plan the day to coincide with OpenHouse London our visitors are a mix of mid-century fans, lovers of print and illustration and Cullen and Goldfinger devotees.
